Opening of Chongqing Branch of SMBCCN

 

 

 

TOKYO, August 17, 2012 --- Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC, President: Takeshi Kunibe) announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (China) Limited (“SMBCCN”, President: Hisanori Kokuga) has opened a branch in Chongqing, People’s Republic of China, as a part of its efforts to further strengthen its office network in mainland China. This is the first and only Japanese branch in Chongqing.

 

Chongqing is one of China’s four direct-controlled municipalities. Chongqing has been receiving and attracting large-scale investments since the launching of the government’s Western China Development Strategy in 2000, as well as attracting many foreign companies including Japanese companies to set up operation. Chongqing is expected to develop as a driving force of economic growth in western China. Since establishing its representative office in Chongqing in 1996, SMBC has established a cordial relationship with the Government of Chongqing. Further, SMBC and SMBCCN have signed economic cooperation agreements with the Chongqing Liangjiang New Area, China’s third state-level new area established in 2010.

 

China is one of SMBC’s most important overseas markets, and its goal is to offer comprehensive financial services to its clients in China in collaboration with SMBCCN. The establishment of Chongqing Branch will expand the network of SMBC and SMBCCN to western China, and will enable it to deliver enhanced services to its clients throughout China (15 offices including Chongqing Branch).
