Despite being born with spina bifida occulta, she began playing wheelchair tennis at the age of 11. At 18 years old, she competed in the London 2012 Paralympic Games, reaching the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles. In 2014, she won both the French Open and the US Open, rising to No. 1 in the world rankings. In doubles, she achieved the first-ever calendar-year Grand Slam by a Japanese female player, a feat recognized by Guinness World Records. At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, she won a bronze medal in singles. In 2017, she claimed three Grand Slam titles and finished the year as world No. 1. She earned a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and won gold medals in both singles and doubles at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. In 2025, she reclaimed the year-end world No. 1 ranking for the first time in eight years.

    SMBC Group’s EMEA Headquarters in London hosted a special dialogue event with Yui Kamiji, World No. 1 wheelchair tennis athlete. Many employees from various locations across the EMEA region participated, making it a valuable opportunity to hear from Yui about her journey and challenges.
    Her message, “embrace challenges and never be afraid of setbacks,” deeply inspired participants, reaffirming that moving forward with passion and purpose is the driving force behind growth.
    SMBC Group will continue to fully support Kamiji’s global challenges and grow together with her.

    Shaka-kachi
    BOON BOON PROJECT

    Shaka-kachi BOON BOON PROJECT is a program designed to support student-athletes who belong to college sports teams. In addition to funding support provided by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), the project collaborates with partner organizations and companies to help students successfully balance both academics and sports, enabling them to pursue a high-quality athletic career.
    The first group of participants was selected in 2024, followed by the second group in 2025, and the program’s activities have been expanding across various regions and sports organizations. As a project partner, Yui Kamiji is actively involved in this initiative.
